Denison Series Presents Cuban Science Fiction Writer

Posted: April 9, 2007

Denison University's Laura C. Harris "Gendered Borders" series presents the Cuban-born science-fiction writer, Daina Chaviano who will give a lecture titled "Exile, National Identity, and Gender" at 4:30 p.m. on Friday (April 13) in the Higley Auditorium (Room 105).

Chaviano graduated from the University of Havana with a degree in English language studies, winning the David Prize while still a student. Now a resident of Florida, she is currently studying for her doctorate in Spanish. Chaviano published several books in the fantasy and science fiction genres, becoming the most renowned and best-selling author for those genres in Cuban literature. She has been equally successful in mainstream literature, winning various awards in both fields here and abroad. Her novels include "The Worlds I Love," "Fairy Tales for Adults," "The Occult Side of Havana," "The Island of Eternal Love," and "Fables from an Extraterrestrial Grandmother."

Chaviano's work is characterized by the exploration of mythical and psychological themes. The trinity of magic-science-religion is a vital pillar of her literature. With it, she explores situations and phenomena that are obviously conflicting in nature, but whose external manifestations can be confused (e.g. clairvoyance and telepathy, reincarnation and genetic memory, alien creatures and mythological beings). The way that she exploits the bond between fantasy and science fiction creates a very personal style that allows her to explore hidden zones of the human conscience, history and society.
