Date of Event: April 3, 2002

Posted: April 1, 2002

A Denison University Vail Visiting Artist, Kevin Clarke, will give a slide presentation of his work that includes DNA sequencing imagery at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday (April 3) in the Cleveland Art Annex, Mulberry Circle.

Clarke is a New York artist whose conceptual portraits incorporating images of DNA sequencing and chromosomes have been the subject of numerous gallery and museum exhibitions. His portraits appear regularly in leading magazines and art journals internationally.

Clarke earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in sculpture from Cooper Union (New York City). He spent four years in Germany and Switzerland and while there completed a book titled "Kunst und Medien," (Art and Media) which was about the Documenta 6 Art Exhibition in Kassel, Germany. He also photographed a Berlin department store, KaDeWe, which became a book titled "Kaufhauswelt," (Department Store World). In 1984, his book "The Red Couch: A Portrait of America" was published by Alfred van der Marck Editions/Harper & Row.

A series of portraits, "From the Blood of the Poets," is derived from DNA sequences of artists and scientists in which a graphic DNA analysis is combined with Clarke's photographic meditations on identity, archetype and icon. "The Invisible Body," a recent exhibition at The Museum Wiesbaden, includes 26 new portraits. A resident of New York City, he currently is developing a project in California.
