The 2008 numbers are in, and Denison University’s Office of Admissions is reporting another record-breaking year. Building on the strength of recent entering classes, the Class of 2012 is “a terrifically talented and diverse group of young men and women,” says Vice President and Director of Admissions Perry Robinson. “In many respects, the Class of 2012 clearly has the potential to be one of Denison’s best. At the same time, it is the most diverse class in the history of the college.”

Robinson cites Denison’s reputation as one of the nation’s leading colleges of the liberal arts and sciences as a key factor in attracting this strong group of incoming students.
“Denison is the first-choice college for a growing number of outstanding students from around the country and overseas,” Robinson says. “The Class of 2012 will further enhance the extraordinary educational experiences offered to all Denison students.”
In 2007-08, Denison’s Office of Admissions received a record of 5,313 applications. A record for selectivity also was set as only 38 percent of Denison’s applicants were offered admission this year. Some 600 are now enrolled, representing 41 states and 29 foreign countries. More than 70 percent of the incoming class are from outside the state of Ohio, and 12 percent are either children or siblings of Denisonians.
Highlights of the Class of 2012 include:
- National Merit Scholar finalists: 33 (more than five percent of the incoming class)
- Ranking in top 10 percent of secondary school class: More than half
- Ranking in top 20 percent of secondary school class: More than three-quarters
- Average GPA: 3.7
- Average SAT composite: 1,298
- Average ACT composite: 28
- Multicultural students: 23 percent
- Graduated with distinguished academic honors: 415
Denison’s Class of 2012 is as accomplished outside the classroom as it is academically. More than two thirds have participated in significant community service projects, and many of them have been the organizers of such activities. In addition, 125 were involved in student government, and 155 held leadership positions in school clubs and organizations. This incoming group includes 15 class presidents, 16 school newspaper editors, and more than half were participants in the fine or performing arts. More than three-quarters of the incoming class were involved in athletics at their schools, and 208 led their peers as team captains and 58 earned all-state recognition. More than three-quarters also have held full- or part-time jobs through the school year.
The University’s Office of Admissions expressed thanks to all of the Denison students, faculty and staff who joined forces to make this admissions year such a resounding success. In addition, special recognition was accorded to Denison’s “DARTers” (members of the Denison Alumni Recruiting Team), led by Senior Associate Director of Admissions Mike Hills, as well as other alumni, parents of current Denison students, and friends of the University who played a pivotal role in recruiting these exceptional students for Denison.
