Meghan Coil to Present a Recital of Classical Violin and Fiddle Music
Posted: March 26, 2003
Denison senior Meghan Coil will perform a senior recital at 3 p.m. on Saturday (March 29) in Burke Recital Hall. She will play three movements from Bach's Partita No. 3 in E major for solo violin and will be joined by Denison affiliate faculty pianist Nelson Harper for the "Spring" Sonata by Beethoven, and a Sonata by the 20th century American composer Ruth Crawford. The program will conclude with a variety of American fiddle music accompanied by Denison professors Andrew Carlson (guitar) and Richard Hood (banjo), Denison student Ethan McGory (bass), and Denison alumnus Brad Halm (mandolin).
Coil, an English literature major, is currently the concertmaster of the Denison University Orchestra and is a student in Denison's Performer's Certificate Program. She has performed on numerous student recitals and has twice received the Gelfer Scholarship designated for an outstanding string student. In addition to her experience as a classical violinist, Meghan has studied the technique of American fiddling and has been a regular performer in Denison's student bluegrass band the "Granvillbillies." In May of 2002 she co-presented a lecture/demonstration with her violin/fiddle teacher Andrew Carlson at the Suzuki Association of the Americas National Conference in Minneapolis. Editor of "Judy" magazine, Meghan has recently been named a recipient of Denison's distinguished leadership award and currently resides at Denison's alternative housing facility, the "Homestead."
