Construction Projects at Denison Approved by Trustees

During its regularly scheduled spring meetings on April 18 and 19, 2008, Denison University’s Board of Trustees approved plans for three important construction projects: a major overhaul of Ebaugh Laboratories, the college’s chemistry and biochemistry facility for teaching and research; improved athletics and recreation facilities, including a new 50-meter natatorium, as well as expanded fitness and locker room spaces; and the renovation of Chamberlin Lodge to become an apartment-style housing unit for approximately 50 upperclass students.
All three projects are part of an ongoing initiative to enhance campus facilities to meet the programmatic and curricular goals of the college in the 21st century.
Design work already underway for the three projects is most complete for the athletics facilities. These designs will be brought before the Village Planning Commission in the near future. The natatorium will be the first stage of construction, and it’s hoped that groundbreaking will occur as early as spring of 2009 with the goal of having it available for use during the 2010-11 swimming and diving season. It will be located to the north of the existing Mitchell Recreation and Athletics Center.
Construction will be carried out in phases for both the chemistry and athletics projects. Both include the renovation of existing space, as well as new additions, and are complicated by the fact that classes and programs must continue through the construction periods. The timeline would have both projects completed in their entirety between January and June of 2012. Assuming the Chamberlin Lodge renovation begins during the summer of 2010, it will be ready for use at the start of the 2011-12 academic year. The combined cost of the three projects is estimated at $59 million.
