Denison will present the lecture “Caring for Creation” by award-winning writer and environmentalist Scott Russell Sanders as a part of the 2009-10 campus theme, “Consumption.” He will read excerpts from his most recent book, “A Conservationist Manifesto,” and share his experience as a committed environmentalist and Quaker. Sanders’ reading and discussion will take place at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 25, in the Higley Hall Auditorium (100 Ridge Road). Sponsored by the Goodspeed Lecture Series and the environmental studies program, this event is free and open to the public.

Sanders’ talk addresses the “greatest challenge facing our society, which is to shift from a culture based on consumption to a culture based on caretaking.” Having taught at Indiana University, where he held the distinguished chair of English until his retirement in 2009, Sanders has produced more than 20 books. His book “A Private History of Awe” was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. In his writing Sanders discusses the human place in nature, the pursuit of social justice, the relationship between culture and geography and the search for a spiritual path.
