The Fulbright Program recently announced the list of colleges and universities that produced the most 2009-2010 U.S. Fulbright Fellows. The success of the top-producing institutions was highlighted in the Oct. 19 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Five students from Denison University won Fulbright awards for 2009-2010 and a total of 16 students won highly competitive scholarships toward international study, teaching, or major internships. Denison has a history of being one of the highest producers of Fulbright scholars among private liberal arts colleges in the nation.

“Denison has a long tradition of service to country, and the Fulbright experience fits well with that tradition,” says Joan Krone, director of the Gilpatrick Center for Student Research and Fellowships, which administers the Fulbright competition at Denison. “We applaud our Fulbright scholars, who are excellent representatives of our university and our country. We also applaud all those who have applied for Fulbright fellowships and have no doubt that they will be outstanding leaders and contributors to the global society in which we live.”

Under this program, 1,557 American students in more than 100 different fields of study have been offered grants to study, teach English, and conduct research in over 125 countries throughout the world beginning this fall.

Of the 1,557, Fulbrighters, 19 percent are at the doctoral level, 17 percent are at the master’s level, and 65 percent are at the bachelor’s degree level. Students receiving awards for this academic year applied through 570 colleges or universities. Lists of Fulbright recipients are available at www.fulbrightonline.org/us.
