Department of Dance at Denison University presents "loominessence"
Date of Event: April 22, 2010
Posted: April 9, 2010
The Department of Dance at Denison University will present the annual spring dance concert, “loominessence,” at 8 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday, April 22-24, in the Doane Dance Performance Space (231 West College Street). With a cast of 40 performers, live music and original compositions by Resident Musician Terrence Karn, “loominessence” will feature an eclectic mix of African and contemporary dance with three new works by guest artist Mark Taylor, Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance Julie Fox, and Assistant Professor of Dance Stafford Berry Jr. The concert is free and open to the public.
Taylor, former artistic director of Dance Alloy Theatre in Pittsburgh and prolific choreographer for more than 25 years, creates dance works derived from body-based somatic practices and contemporary modern dance vocabulary. Light and refreshing, his work with the students at Denison represents a dual journey: the making of a dance and an exploration into the use of body-mind movement discoveries as generative source material.
Fox, originally from Houston, Texas, has been creating contemporary dance theatre work for the past 10 years in both Houston and Columbus. Edgy and contemplative, full-bodied and strong, Fox’s piece with Denison students dives into Karn’s eerily haunting soundscape and investigates the dynamic breaking point of a community coming to the line — a red carpet line — of intimacy and understanding.
Berry, teacher and choreographer of contemporary African dance for more than 15 years, will present his second work with Denison students. With a cast of 17 dancers, four musicians, and explosive, high-energy choreography, this final work on the evening’sprogram will inspire and uplift the spirit and send the audience out into the night ready to move and enjoy life.
Limited seating is available. For more information, or if you need special assistance with seating arrangements, contact Susan Kosling at koslings@denison.edu or 740-587-6712.
