Denison University’s Department of Dance presents a concert, “Sharks Before Drowning,” featuring Vail Artist-in-Residence Molly Shanahan, at 8 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, March 21-22, in the Doane Dance Performance Space (231 West College Street). The performance is free and open to the public.

A member of the Denison class of 1990, Shanahan is artistic director of Mad Shak, an innovative dance company based out of Chicago and will perform with her company. “Sharks Before Drowning” is a new work, funded by a National Performance Network Creation Fund grant, as part of her company’s multi-year project, “Stamina of Curiosity.” Shanahan is an artist whose work has been recognized internationally. She has toured in New York and Canada and has received multiple accolades for her experimental and well-crafted dances. Molly will be in residence for two full weeks, teaching and working with students of dance.

“Sharks Before Drowning” explores the tension between the drive to succeed and the adaptability that is necessary to live within a shifting environment. Shanahan advances her movement vocabulary, a synthesis of spirals, coils, and nuanced shifts of internal energy made transparent for the witness. She is a member of the dance faculty at Northwestern University and teaches throughout Chicago and nationally, in residencies associated with the creation and presentation of her work.
