Denison Recital Features Michael Davis and Nelson Harper

Posted: February 26, 2007

Denison University presents guest artist Michael Davis on violin and Denison faculty member Nelson Harper on piano for a recital at 3 p.m. on Sunday (March 4) in Burke Recital Hall.

British-born Davis is artist professor emeritus of violin at Ohio State University where, in 2004, he was given the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching. He continues to teach, giving seminars and master classes at institutions in both the United States and Europe. Davis has appeared as recitalist and soloist at New York's Town Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Metropolitan Art Museum and at musical centers on four continents.

Davis plays a Joseph Guarnerious filius Andrea dated 1709. In Central Ohio he has played with Pro Musica and at the Lancaster Festival. His playing has earned praise in reviews from The London Times to the Columbus Dispatch. The New York Times said "His technical command was spectacular and he displayed an almost orchestral array of tone colors and a magnificent sense of line and style."

Harper is known for his versatility as soloist, chamber musician and vocal accompanist. He has performed with Davis for more than 20 years in concerts in the United States and in London's Wigmore Hall. Harper serves on the piano faculty of Denison University and was formerly on the faculty of Ohio State where he also received a Distinguished Teaching Award in the School of Music. He frequently gives master classes and recitals at universities.

The program includes: "Sonata in A major" by J.S. Bach, "Sonata in D minor" by J. Brahms, "Chacony" by Wilfred Josephs, two pieces by William Walton and the "Much Ado About Nothing" suite by Erich Korngold.
