A Denison University student has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Davis Projects for Peace.
Dana Meyer, a senior from Napoleon, Ohio, has written a winning proposal titled, “Access to Healthcare.” She will conduct the project this summer in Bolivia, where she will work with a non-governmental organization (NGO) to conduct health and hygiene workshops. The NGO, Movimiento Sonrisa, is a program established to provide economic and emotional support to hospitalized children. Her goal is to bridge the social gap between urban and rural populations and provide a reasonable quality of life to all Bolivians. At the end of her work, she plans to bring a member of the Movimiento Sonrisa back with her to lecture about Bolivia and to learn about issues in the United States.
Meyer previously has participated in a study abroad program with the Schools of International Training in Cochabamba, Bolivia. She speaks Spanish and has studied the Quechua language, which will help her communicate with the local community. After graduating from Denison, she plans to attend medical school.
Davis Projects for Peace, now in its third year, honors philanthropist Kathryn Wasserman Davis, who launched the initiative on the occasion of her 100th birthday in 2007. The program encourages and supports undergraduates to create and implement their ideas for building peace throughout the world. Denison is one of more than 90 schools eligible for these awards as a Davis United World College Scholars Program participant institution.
