View Denison Through International Eyes

Date of Event: March 1, 2007

Posted: February 28, 2007

The Denison Museum presents "Dissonance and Harmony: Arrivals and Departures," a photo exhibition created by Denison's international first-year students. It opens at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday (March 1) at the Denison Museum. The exhibition, which will move to the Higley Hall lobby on Friday (March 2), is free and open to the public and will be on view until the end of the semester.

Every day students and faculty at Denison University come across objects and situations that they are so used to that they pay little or no attention to them. While most campus residents cruise through these familiar environments with ease, there is one group on Denison's campus that struggles to keep up the pace -- the international students. What does Denison's freshly arrived international student find different from home; what causes them to experience confusion, awkwardness and dissonance on our campus?

At the beginning of the fall semester 2006, each international first-year student was handed a single-use camera and asked to snap pictures of objects that caused them dissonance. Two to four pictures from each student were selected to be a part of the exhibition. Accompanying each image is text explaining the photographer's thoughts about it.
