Senior Dance Performance at Denison

Date of Event: March 6, 2009

Posted: February 23, 2009

A senior honors choreographic research project, “Desde Siempre,” will be performed at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 6, and 3 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in the Doane Dance Performance Space (231 West College Street). Free and open to the public.

Diana Dixon, a 2005 graduate of Perrysburg High School in Ohio, is a senior dance and Spanish double major. This is her second choreographic work at Denison University. While studying abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dixon learned to dance the traditional Argentine tango, a popular social dance filled with history and passion. She returned to Denison to explore and share the tango. Her first piece, Lindo San Mateo, was choreographed in the spring of 2008. The challenge of the art form, her appreciation of dance and her passion for the Spanish language and Latin-American culture motivated Dixon to expand the project into a yearlong senior research study.

“Desde Siempre” is a tango-contemporary fusion, inspired by the history of the Argentine tango. The performance reflects the significance of the tango in Argentine culture and is deeply representative of Dixon’s personal history. She is interested in the movement of the body and the expressiveness of and history conveyed by the tango, the ability that dance has to cross cultural and lingual boundaries, and in creating an atmosphere that can be understood and enjoyed by any audience.

Denison students who participate in the work include: Owen Beamer ’12 (Newark, Ohio), Brittany Becka ’10 (Highland Heights, Ohio), Justine Hoch ’12 (Perrysburg, Ohio), Samantha Hyde ’12 (Akron, Ohio), Kari Kurtzhalts ’10 (East Aurora, NY), Shavely Peralta ’11 (Methuen, Mass), and Heather Robertson ’10 (Edgerton, Ohio).
