Philosopher Hubert Dreyfus to lecture at Denison.

Leading scholar and author Hubert Dreyfus will lecture on the strengths and shortcomings of computers. The lecture titled “Computation as Salvation: Awaiting the Singularity” is scheduled at 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 20, in Denison University’s Burton D. Morgan Lecture Hall (150 Ridge Road). The event, sponsored by the Spectrum Series and the Department of Philosophy, is free and open to the public.
A second event featuring Dreyfus, a philosophy colloquium, will take place at 4:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 21, in the Burton D. Morgan Lecture Hall (150 Ridge Road). The colloquium also is free and open to the public.
Dreyfus is a leading Heideggerian scholar and professor of philosophy at University of California at Berkeley. Known for his work on the nature of expertise, artificial intelligence and existential philosophy, he has received many awards for his scholarship and for teaching, including a Barwise Prize and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
Dreyfus is the author or co-author of several books, including “Being in the World: A Commentary on Heidegger’s Being and Time” and “What Computers Still Can’t Do: A Critique of Artificial Reasoning.” He recently was in a documentary, also titled “Being in the World,” and he has co-authored a forthcoming book, “All Things Shining.”
