GRANVILLE, Ohio— Denison University has been named to the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the federal program that provides recognition to colleges and universities that reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities.

According to Lyn Robertson, director of the Alford Center for Service Learning, “We are pleased to be partners with schools, social service agencies, and residents in Licking County. This year’s designation is based on the community service of students in the Denison Community Association, America Reads, Service Learning courses, athletic teams, fraternities and sororities.” Eighty percent of Denison students did some form of service last year, and more than 600 students worked on a continuing basis in the community.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which administers the annual Honor Roll award, recognized more than 600 colleges and universities for their impact on issues from poverty and homelessness to environmental justice. On campuses across the country, thousands of students joined their faculty to develop innovative programs and projects to meet local needs using the skills gained in their classrooms.

“Through service, these institutions are creating the next generation of leaders by challenging students to tackle tough issues and create positive impacts in the community,” said Robert Velasco, acting chief executive officer of CNCS. “We applaud the Honor Roll schools, their faculty and students for their commitment to make service a priority in and out of the classroom. Together, service and learning increase civic engagement while fostering social innovation among students, empowering them to solve challenges within their communities.”

The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America programs, and leads President Obama’s national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
