GRANVILLE, Ohio—The Denison University East Asian Film and Lecture Series takes place over the weekend of Friday, March 2, to Sunday, March 4, with events that address political freedom, artistic expression, economic advancement and cultural encounters in contemporary China. · Friday, March 2; 7 p.m.: Screening of “The Gate of Heavenly Peace,” at the Cinema House (201 N. Mulberry). A feature-length documentary about the 1989 protest movement in China, which reflects on the drama, tension, humor, absurdity, heroism, and many tragedies of the six weeks from April to June in 1989.
· Saturday, March 3; 2:30 p.m.: Lecture by filmmaker Carma Hinton in the auditorium of Higley Hall (100 Ridge Road). Hinton discusses the challenges of making “The Gate of Heavenly Peace.” She will present brief excerpts of the film as well as footage that did not make it into the final cut and address the legacy of Tiananmen today.
· Sunday, March 4; 2:30 p.m.: Screening of “Ai Weiwei: Fairytale,” at the Cinema House (210 N. Mulberry). Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei made headlines worldwide after being jailed by the Chinese government for 81 days in 2011 for tax evasion. Many believe it was Ai’s art and ideas that led to the imprisonment. “Fairytale”takes us inside one of his most ambitious works.
· Sunday, March 4; 7 p.m.; Screening of “24 City,” at the Cinema House (201 N. Mulberry).“24 City” chronicles the dramatic closing of a once-prosperous state-owned aeronautics factory in Chengdu, a city in Sichuan province in southwest China, and its conversion into a sprawling luxury apartment complex.
