East Asian Film Series

The Denison Museum and the Department of Modern Languages are co-presenting an East Asian Film and Lecture Series, which will screen at 7 p.m. on five consecutive Mondays beginning Monday, March 21, in the auditorium of Slayter Hall (200 Ridge Road). The films, sponsored by the Freeman Foundation, are free and open to the public.
• Monday, March 21: “Thirst,” a 2009 horror/drama film, written, produced and directed by Park Chan-woo, is loosely based on the novel Thérèse Raquin by Émile Zola. The film tells the story of a priest, who is in love with his friend’s wife, turning into a vampire through a failed medical experiment.
• Monday, March 28: “Infernal Affairs,” a 2002 Hong Kong crime-thriller film directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, tells the story of a police officer who infiltrates the Triads, and a police officer secretly working for the same gang. Followed by speaker Cindy Wong, of the College of Staten Island.
• Monday, April 4: “Still Life,” a 2006 Chinese film directed by Jia Zhangke, shot in the old village of Fengjie, the small town on the Yangtze River, which is slowly being destroyed by the building of the Three Gorges Dam. “Still Life” tells the story of two people in search of their spouses. Followed by speaker Yun Peng, of the University of Pittsburgh.
• Monday, April 11: “Millennium Mambo,” directed by Hsiao-hsien Hou, in which Vicki narrates describes her youth and story of her changing life at the beginning of the new millennium. Followed by speaker Michael Berry of the University of California, Santa Barbara.
• Monday, April 18: “Rashomon,” directed by Akira Kurosawa, is a tale about a dead samurai, his whimsical wife and a boorish bandit. Their narrated versions of the same story are so contrasting that a psychic is called upon to conjure up the dead samurai’s spirit to record his testimony in order to corroborate the facts.
