Posted: September 27, 2010
Denison University presents a five-week East Asian Film Series, sponsored by the Freeman Foundation. All films will be screened at 7 p.m. in Slayter Hall Auditorium (200 Ridge Road) and are free and open to the public.
Tuesday, Oct. 5: “Osaka Elegy.” A young woman working as a telephone operator in 1930s Osaka must pay her father’s debts. The film highlights hypocrisy and the suffering of women.
Tuesday, Oct. 12: “Tokyo Story.” Considered one of cinema’s masterpieces, “Tokyo Story” follows an aging couple, on their journey from their rural village to visit their two married children in bustling, postwar Tokyo. The film unfolds a theme of generational conflict.
Tuesday, Oct. 19: “Ballad of Narayama.” Soon to die, Orin spends her last year arranging all the affairs of her family and village. Some of her actions include punishing a family that is hoarding food and helping her younger son lose his virginity.
Tuesday, Oct. 26: “Spirited Away.” Chihiro and her family take a shortcut on the way to their new house, and they come to the world of spirit. Her parents have been cursed by a powerful witch and Chihiro must find a way to save them.
Tuesday, Nov. 2: “Nobody Knows.” Four children live secretly with their mother in a small apartment in Tokyo. When their mother leaves them, they are forced to engage with the world outside their cocooned universe, and the fragile balance that has sustained them collapses.
