Fair Trade Discussion at Denison University

Date of Event: April 9, 2009

Posted: March 27, 2009

The Denison University Fair Trade Alliance will host a discussion on business and fair trade with a panel of local fair-trade organizations beginning at 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, in the Burton D. Morgan Center Lecture Hall (150 Ridge Road). The discussion is free and open to the public.

The panel will include Granville resident Eric Rosenberg, founder of Trade Justice Mission, whose Okoa Jewelry for Justice project has established cooperatives in Zambia, Cambodia, Thailand and the Dominican Republic, where marginalized women are brought together to create beautiful jewelry. Trade Justice Mission then markets the jewelry and returns 100 percent of the profits to the women, empowering them to strengthen their local economy and lift up their families and communities.

Connie De Jong from Global Gallery in Columbus also will be present. Global Gallery began as a church-based effort in 1991 and has since expanded to include three stores with alliances to schools, universities, businesses, cultural organizations and UNICEF. In addition to selling fair trade artisan products from around the world, Global Gallery hosts special events, workshops and presentations, both within the store and outside in the larger community, to educate people about how they can contribute to equitable partnerships between producers and consumers on both the local and global scale.

Panel members will provide brief introductions of themselves and their organizations, then the floor will be opened to questions and discussion. The Lecture Hall will open at 11:30 a.m., and light refreshments will be provided.
