Denison Student Choirs Present Fall Concert of 'Sacred And Secular' Music

The choral music faculty at Denison University announces the Fall Concert for Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and the newly created Women's Choir. The concert is titled "We're Fallin' for You" and will include music of nature, thanks and love. The performance, at 8 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 4) in Swasey Chapel, is free and open to the public.

The Concert Choir will perform music from Russia, Germany, Austria, and the United States. Belinda Andrews-Smith, soprano and coordinator of vocal studies at Denison, will sing with the choir forLaudate Dominumby Mozart. Judy Rauch, choral director at Lakewood High School, provides piano accompaniment for the choir, and Julia Parker, organist at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic church inaccompanies on the organ.

The Women's Choir will be performing in Latin and English. They will sing a variety of pieces from the 20th century, including a gospel piece andWhen I Fall in Love. They are accompanied by first-year student Bryan Blaskie of Pickerington.

The Chamber Singers will performa cappellawith English, Bulgarian, and Italian compositions.

These three choirs are under the direction of Denison's new coordinator of choral activities, Bonnie Borshay Sneed. Sneed earned a bachelor's degree from Furman University, a master's degree in choral conducting from Southern Methodist, and a doctorate in choral conducting from Michigan State. Sneed also sang with the Robert Shaw Festival Singers for a weeklong workshop performance of Verdi'sRequiem. She is a frequent clinician and adjudicator for high school choral workshops and choral contests, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the American Choral Director's Association, and the Music Educator's National Conference. She has also published multiple articles and reviews in theChoral Journal.

In 2006, Sneed will be conducting the Denison University Chamber Singers and Orchestra in an eight-day tour of Italy, including performances in the Duomo in Florence, Venice, and Milan.
