Denison ‘Farmscape’ Class Offers Photography Exhibit

Date of Event: December 6, 2008

Posted: November 24, 2008

Denison University will host an opening reception for a professionally juried photography exhibition at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, in the Welsh Hills room of the Burton D. Morgan Center (150 Ridge Road). The show highlights the best artistic work of 16 students enrolled in the “Farmscape: Artistic Perspectives on Farmland Preservation” course taught by Associate Professor and Director of Environmental Studies Abram Kaplan. The opening and exhibition are free and open to the public.

During the fall semester, the class visited six Ohio farms to interview the farmers and intensively photograph the property, with an eye for representing the challenges and stories behind the issue of farmland preservation. Each student produced a hardbound book of his or her own photographic work, representing individual views about the meaning and importance of farms, the role that farmland preservation can play and the threats to our rural character across the state and the nation.

The students also selected five of their personal favorite images to submit for the jurying process in anticipation of the final exhibition. Marcella Hackhardt, professor of art at Kenyon College and official juror for the show, will select 32 images for installation. By agreement of the class, each student will have one image included, and the other 16 images will be chosen solely on their merits.

The exhibition opens with the reception and will continue until mid-January. The work will occupy both hallways and conference rooms on the second and third floors of the Burton D. Morgan Center. The students’ work will be available for purchase, with proceeds going to support future projects of the Farmscape class, bringing greater awareness to the community about farmland preservation in Ohio.

Members of the Farmscape class are: Miranda Carter ’09, Sarah Glick ’10, Dan Andrews ’10, Sam Keenan ’10, Natasha Wright ’10, Gina Weinberger ’10, Coralina Breuer ’11, William Eckley ’11, Nick Elliot ’11, Charlotte Harris ’11, Chris Hart ’11, Eric Hess ’11, Kevin Leibe ’11, David Sisal ’11, Clara Fecht ’12 and Andy Hendrickson ’12.
