Denison juried photography art exhibit at Bryn Du Mansion

Date of Event: April 23, 2010

Posted: April 9, 2010

Food, farms, and photography: that’s the idea behind the Denison University Farmscape class’ juried art exhibition. The opening reception is from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 23, at the Bryn Du Mansion (537 Jones Road, Granville, Ohio). The exhibit also will be open from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 25. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

In a course recently celebrated as one of the top 10 “Farmland Protection Trailblazers” in the nation by American Farmland magazine, 16 students at Denison University traveled to a wide variety of Ohio farms, food processing plants and food providers, taking thousands of photographs evocative of their experiences in the American food system. Each student produced a hardbound book of his or her photographs and then submitted their best work to be juried for this exhibition.

Photographer Sheilah Wilson, assistant professor of art at Denison, served as the official juror for this year’s show and selected the top 32 images from the photographs. She notes, “The images submitted from the Farmscape class show students grappling with methods of food production, consumption and profit. It has been very interesting to see the moments of convergence and divergence in the individual stories told through the student’s images.” The exhibit was curated jointly with the Granville Studio of Visual Arts.

The course and exhibit are sponsored in part by the Denison University Burton D. Morgan Program in Liberal Arts and Entrepreneurship Education.
