French films range from wistful to provocative in Denison festival

The Department of Modern Languages presents a French film festival, covering themes such as xenophobia, gruesome fairy tales, and Paris, the city of lights. The five films are free and open to the public.

  • “Welcome,” directed by Philippe Lioret, screened at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24, in the Slayter Hall auditorium (200 Ridge Road), is a study of a budding friendship and a compassionate look at the perils faced by illegal immigrants.
  • “Paris,” directed by Cedric Klapish, screened at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25, in the Higley Hall auditorium (100 Ridge Road), provides a sense of the multitudes and complexities contained within one of the world’s greatest cities. 
  • “Barbe Bleue,” directed by Catherine Breillat, screened at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 28, in the Slayter Hall auditorium (200 Ridge Road), is a retelling of Perrault’s text, in which teenage siblings Marie-Catherine and Anne descend into poverty after their father dies and Marie-Catherine decides to marry the terrifying Bluebeard as a way out of destitution.
  • “C’est Dur D’etre Aime Par Des Cons” (It’s Hard Being Loved by Jerks), directed by Daniel Leconte, screened at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, in the Higley Hall auditorium (100 Ridge Road) a documentary on the freedom of the press, censorship, and the right of religious minorities, looks at the 2007 Paris trial regarding 12 satirical cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed that originally had appeared in a Danish newspaper.
  • “Coco Avant Chanel,” (Coco before Chanel) directed by Anne Fountaine, opening reception at 6:45 p.m.; screening at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, in the Slayter Hall auditorium (200 Ridge Road). On a thoughtful exploration of the pre-fame life of the world’s greatest fashion designer, focusing on Coco Chanel during the Belle Epoque.
