GRANVILLE, Ohio—“Fiddler’s Three,” consisting of two violin workshops and a culmination concert with Richard Greene, Randy Sabien and Andy Carlson, will be held at Denison University on Saturday, Oct. 22. The workshops will be held at 1:30 p.m. with Sabien and at 3 p.m. with Greene, both in the rehearsal room of Burke Hall (240 West Broadway). The concert, which features Greene, Sabien and Carlson, will be held at 7 p.m. in Burke Recital Hall (240 West Broadway). Sponsored by the Warner Professorship and the Department of Music, the workshops and concert are free and open to the public. Greene first attained prominence with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys in 1966. It was during this time that he perfected his invention of the “chop,” a rhythmic/melodic bowing technique now universally employed throughout the world of fiddling.

Sabien is known as a jazz violinist with a swinging, rocking, rhythmic and bluesy sound that often plays more like a saxophone than a violin. Currently Sabien is the founding chair of the string department at McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, Minn.
Carlson has performed as a soloist and as a chamber musician throughout the United States. He began learning traditional fiddle music from his grandfather at age 5. He has won numerous fiddle contests and has twice been named the Georgia State Champion Fiddler and was named the 2000 Ohio Grand Champion fiddler. An associate professor at Denison, he teaches violin, conducts the chamber orchestra and directs the bluegrass ensemble.
