Film Projection Performance at Denison
Date of Event: February 5, 2009
Posted: January 30, 2009 / Last Updated: February 5, 2009
Visiting artists Sandra Gibson and Luis Recoder will present their live film projection performances at the Denison University Department of Cinema, in connection with Professor Jonathan Walley’s seminar “Cinema Beyond Film: Expanded Cinema, 1920s to the Present,” at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, at the Cinema House Annex (118 North Mulberry Street). The event is free and open to the public.
Gibson and Recoder’s work has been featured in two Whitney Museum Biennials; numerous major film festivals, including the 2009 Sundance Film Festival; and international art exhibitions. Their film performances use multiple 16mm projectors and methods of refracting and transforming the beams of light. As each of the pieces unfolds, they manipulate the projectors, creating a constantly changing and hypnotic sequence of abstract imagery reminiscent of Rothko and colour-field painting.
