Denison University will host nationally recognized sports psychology expert Joel Fish to discuss "Reducing Risky Student-Athlete Behavior." This convocation, set for 8 p.m. on Monday (Feb. 11) in Slayter Auditorium, is free and open to the public. Fish will present innovative strategies and programming ideas that focus on pressures that all college students, not just athletes, face. He will address issues such as substance abuse, depression, eating disorders, relationship violence, and sexual behavior.
Fish has worked extensively with athletes at all skill levels including members from professional sports teams such as the Philadelphia Flyers, 76ers, Phillies, and the USA women's national soccer team. He is the director of The Center of Sport Psychology and has been a contributor to many national conferences. Fish earned his bachelor's degree from Clark University, master's degree from Temple University, and doctorate from University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The Athletic Health Education Committee has sponsored Fish's visit to Denison. The committee was formed to address particular issues that face Denison student-athletes and this presentation is being funded by grants from the NCAA. This is Fish's first visit to Denison and he will also be meeting with numerous student organizations to discuss topics of team building, reducing risky behavior, recognizing the signals of risky behavior, and proposing innovative strategies and programming ideas.
