Denison University's music department will present a concert of flute music by the Denison Flute Ensemble and by an ensemble of faculty members and friends at 8 p.m., Thursday (April 10) in Burke Recital Hall. The program is titled "Chamber Music for Flute and Friends" and is free and open to the public.

The Ensemble of faculty members and friends is composed of Affiliated Studio Instructor Leslie Maaser on flute, Sarah Ramsey on piano, Affiliated Studio Instructor Steve Rosenberg on oboe and Assistant Professor Andy Carlson on violin. The Denison Flute Ensemble includes: Lindsay Bickel, a freshman from Columbus, Ind.; Amy Bruestle, a senior from Cincinnati; Miranda Bodfish a sophomore from Littleton, Colo.; and Laura Reuther, a sophomore from Worthington.

The concert features works by composers from the 17th century to the 20th century. The "Grand Quartet in E minor" by Friedrich Kuhlau will open the program followed by works by Erik Satie, Joseph Haydn, Madeleine Dring, Georg Philipp Telemann, Jacques Ibert, J.B. de Boismoitier and Catherine McMichael.

Maaser is an affiliated studio instructor of flute at Denison and the director of the flute ensemble. She also is on the faculty at Wright State University, and plays with its woodwind quintet and chamber orchestra. She has been the principal flutist with the Welsh Hills Symphony Orchestra and also plays with the Columbus Camerata and the Columbus Bach Ensemble.

Maaser has performed as a soloist and served as a clinician throughout the Midwest, including as a featured soloist at the Ohio Music Education Association Conference. In addition, she has performed in several orchestras including Opera Columbus, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and the East Lansing Opera Company. She earned her bachelor's degree from Michigan State University, a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a doctorate in flute performance from Ohio State University.

Rosenberg was a member of the New York All-State Orchestra and studied at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, earning a bachelor's degree. An active chamber music player, Rosenberg also has played with the Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra, Opera Columbus, the Lancaster Festival Orchestra and the Columbus Symphony. He serves as artistic director of the Short North Performing Arts Association and was executive director of the Organization of Ohio Orchestras for four years.

A frequent performer at Denison, Carlson recently debuted a CD which features a wide range of music, including traditional old-time Appalachian, bluegrass, swing, blues, "new" grass, classical and contemporary acoustic. Carlson joined the Denison faculty in 2000 and is currently teaching violin and music history along with directing the Orchestra and several student bluegrass ensembles. He earned his bachelor and master of music degrees from the University of Georgia and his doctorate in musical arts and pedagogy from the University of Iowa. He served as concertmaster of the University of Iowa's Symphony Orchestra and its Chamber Orchestra.
