Denison University Hosts Flute Night Featuring Ervin Monroe

The music department at Denison University is hosting Flute Night, featuring flutist Ervin Monroe. Monroe will present a master class at 6 p.m. on Thursday (April 21) in Burke Rehearsal Room and a recital at 8 p.m. in Burke Recital Hall that evening. Monroe will be joined by Robert Brooks on the piano and they will perform works by Hasselmans, Widor, Kohler, Faure, Griffes, Mercandante and Doppler. Both the master class and recital are free and open to the public. In addition, Muramatsu America and Piper Press will have displays of flutes and music.
Monroe is principal flutist of the Detroit Symphony and has performed with the Mozarteum Orchestra, the Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia and the Royal, Boshoi and Danish Ballets. He can be heard on solo, chamber and Detroit Symphony recordings.
On the faculty of Wayne State University, Monroe is also president of Muramatsu America. His publications include arrangements and original compositions. He has served as president of the NFA, and as consulting editor for the "Flutist Quarterly," which he also founded. Monroe has also served as musical director of several Michigan orchestras.
Monroe earned his bachelor's degree from the Oberlin Conservatory and his master's degree from the Manhattan School. His teachers include Robert Willoughby, Harold Bennett and William Kincaid.
