Denison Is a Top Producer Of Fulbright Scholars

Posted: November 5, 2007 / Last Updated: February 29, 2008

The Fulbright Program recently announced the complete list of colleges and universities that produced the most 2007-2008 U.S. Fulbright Fellows. The success of the top-producing institutions was highlighted in the Oct. 26 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Three students from Denison University won Fulbright awards for 2007-2008 and a total of eight students won highly competitive scholarships toward graduate study, teaching, or major internships. Denison has a history of being one of the highest producers of Fulbright scholars among private liberal arts colleges in the nation.

Denison University President Dale Knobel said, "Denison graduates have the combination of academic achievement, global consciousness, and passion for service that makes them excellent candidates for Fulbright teaching and research fellowships. I'm not surprised that our graduates are selected year after year."

The Fulbright competition is administered at Denison through the Honors Program. "Prestigious awards such as the Fulbright are important to Denison students in part because the application process, which is quite demanding, helps to shape and articulate what they want to do with their lives and careers," says Professor Kent Maynard, director of the program. "And the fact that we have so many applicants and award winners is a reflection of Denison's commitment to the very best in liberal arts education."

Under the Fulbright program, almost 1,500 American students in more than 100 different fields of study have been offered grants to study, teach English, and conduct research in over 125 countries throughout the world beginning this fall.

Of the 1,500 Fulbrighters, 19 percent are at the Ph.D. degree level, 17 percent are at the master's level, and 65 percent are at the bachelor's degree level. Students receiving awards for this academic year applied through 570 colleges or universities.
