DU Gamelan Ensemble Performance Scheduled
Date of Event: November 13, 2007
Posted: November 5, 2007 / Last Updated: November 11, 2007
The Denison University Gamelan Ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, in the Burke Hall Rehearsal Room under the direction of Seth Rogers. The concert is free and open to the public.
At the heart of traditional Balinese gamelan music, is the "kotekan" a musical structure in which layers of individually simple patterns are played in a complex interlocking fashion, creating a vibrant tapestry of composite melodies. It is a musical structure that embodies, through sound, an ideal model of community and cooperation.
Denison's Gamelon Ensemble's musicians include Denison students, faculty, and members of the Granville community. Their instruments of choice are traditional Balinese instruments, including metallophones (metal xylophone-like instruments) of various sizes, gongs, and tuned bamboo angklung rattles.
The ensemble is led by Denison alumnus Seth Rogers '03, a studio instructor in Denison's Department of Music who also directs the Latin Jazz Percussion Ensemble. He recently completed his master of music degree in jazz studies at Youngstown State University. As a Denison student, Rogers studied percussion with Guy Remonko and composition with Ching-Chu Hu while playing in jazz ensembles led by Tom Carroll and Pete Mills, including the Latin Jazz Percussion Ensemble.
