The Occupy Movement and American Churches

Date of Event: February 5, 2013

Posted: January 25, 2013

GRANVILLE, Ohio—A lecture that explores the intersection of the Occupy Movement and churches in the United States will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5, in the auditorium of Denison University’s Herrick Hall (500 West Loop). The lecture, by Kwok Pui Lan, William F. Cole Professor of Christian Theology and Spirituality at Episcopal Divinity School, is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Erin Lennon at 740-587-6241 or visit www.denison.edu.

In her lecture, “Occupy Religion, the Church, and Social Change,” Kwok will detail how the Occupy Movement forces American churches to discuss class and economic justice and the impact of globalization in the world. She discusses what form public theology might take in solidarity with the 99 percent, and challenges models of religious congregation that distance churches from social change and models of divinity that cast God in the image of the 1 percent.

Denison’s Goodspeed Lecture Series brings accomplished religion scholars to campus to share their knowledge to enlighten the Denison Community of the various issues in the field.
