Date of Event: April 25, 2013

GRANVILLE, Ohio—Sara Patterson, associate professor of theological studies at Hanover College, will present a lecture at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, in the Welsh Hills Room of Denison University’s Burton D. Morgan Center (150 Ridge Road). The lecture, “It was like an Oprah Moment: Religious Expression and Experience at Salvation Mountain,” is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Goodspeed Lecture Series. For more information, contact Erin Lennon at 740-587-6241 or visit www.denison.edu.

Patterson’s work investigates the stories surrounding Leonard Knight’s Salvation Mountain, a piece of outsider religious art in the California desert. She argues that Knight is akin to the early Christian desert fathers who escaped to the desert in order to experience the divine more fully. She is the co-editor, with Fay Botham, of “Race, Religion, Region: Landscapes of Encounter in the American West.”

The Goodspeed Lecture Series features scholars whose work is in the field of religion or is related to religious issues. The fund is named in honor of the late Edgar J. Goodspeed, an 1890 Denison graduate, who was one of the nine biblical scholars who worked on the Revised Standard Version of Scriptures, published in 1946.
