Denison University will host mathematician Michael Starbird at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, in the Burton D. Morgan Lecture Hall (150 Ridge Road). Sponsored by the mathematics and computer science department and the Gordon Lecture Series, this event is free and open to the public.

Starbird is a professor of mathematics and a University Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. He has co-authored three books, the latest titled “Coincidences, Chaos, and All That Math Jazz: Making Light of Weighty Ideas.” He also has been awarded the 2007 Mathematical Association of America Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo National Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics, and the 2002 Eyes of Texas Excellence Award.

The Doris G. Gordon Lecture Series is named in honor of Doris Gilbert Gordon, a high school mathematics teacher and a friend of Denison. The Doris G. Gordon fund was established by Newark attorney L. James Gordon, class of 1950, and his sister, Janet Gordon Forbes, class of 1955, in memory of their mother who had a great love of mathematics. A long time resident of Granville, Doris Gordon was the wife of Leland J. Gordon who was a Denison professor of economics.
