Posted: November 6, 2006
They sing. They clap their hands. They rock, move and sway. They are the Denison Gospel Choir and they will perform under the direction of Raymond Wise '83 at 7 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 12) in Swasey Chapel. The performance is free and open to the public.
The Denison Gospel Choir was formed in the spring of 2000 and has grown from 26 members to more than 100 members. All participants in the choir are enrolled in an African-American Gospel Music and Spirituals course for which they earn academic credit and receive training in the performance and historical development of African-American gospel. This multi-cultural choir is comprised of students, faculty, and staff members of all races and nationalities from the Denison campus and local community.
Wise is the founder and president of Raise Productions, a gospel music production company in Columbus. Wise serves as a part-time member of the music department at Denison. Wise has composed more than 500 works. He earned his master's and doctoral degrees in music education at Ohio State University.
The program will feature the musical compositions and arrangement of various gospel composers. Some of the titles include: "I Came To Magnify The Lord," "Praise Him, Praise Him," "Hallowed Be Thy Name," "Praise to the Rock," and "Send Up Judah."
Wise says, "come ready to participate in the musical celebration."
