GRANVILLE, Ohio— According to a popular saying in Dakar, Senegal, “You can find anything in the world at Colobane Market.” The documentary film “Market Imaginary” explores Dakar’s Colobane Market and its surrounding neighborhood. The film’s United States premiere will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, in the auditorium of Denison University’s Higley Hall (100 Ridge Road). In addition, a lecture by Mamadou Diouf, director of African Studies at Columbia University, will take place at 5:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the auditorium of Higley Hall (100 Ridge Road). The lecture, “Youth, Culture and Society in Late 20th Century Dakar,” brings a broader context of Dakar to the community. Both events are free and open to the public. The documentary was written, directed and produced by Joanna Grabski, associate professor of art history at Denison, in collaboration with Christian Faur, director of collaborative technology and fine arts. Also assisting on the film were Fanta Diamanka of the Women’s Studies program and Aissata Barry, a member of the Denison class of 2015. The dialogue is in Wolof, French and English with subtitles in English.

The film considers the many ways the Colobane Market is embedded in its neighborhood and the broader imagination of Dakar’s residents. “Market Imaginary” is based on long-term research about the market, the surrounding neighborhood and the city of Dakar. It also features interviews with several of its residents.

The documentary examines a broad spectrum of aspects that surround the market. It explores the speculations involved in market business for both buyers and sellers and the history and growth of the neighborhood following the displacement of populations during the French colonial era. It also looks at the processes of creativity and reinvention by examining how artists use the material resources and visual possibilities offered by the market and city more broadly.
