Two members of Denison University’s class of 2009 have been accepted in the national AmeriCorps VISTA program through the Ohio Campus Compact.

Amanda Dever (Bowling Green, Ohio), an English and international studies double major, will serve at Marietta College. Erica Phillips (Columbus, Ohio), an English and Spanish double major, will serve at Ashland University.

VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America), created in 1965, is a national service program in which volunteers live in the communities they serve, designing programs to meet the needs of the underserved and those in poverty. In 1993, AmeriCorps was created and merged with VISTA. Ohio Campus Compact (OCC) serves as the state branch of the National Campus Compact and promotes community service that develops students’ citizenship skills and values, encourages collaborative partnerships between campuses and communities, and assists faculty members who seek to integrate public and community engagement into their teaching and research. The OCC office is located on Denison’s campus. The OCC’s AmeriCorps*VISTA program was created in 1998 with six volunteers focusing on literacy. In 2009-2010, the program will enroll 33 AmeriCorps*VISTA members who will serve on 26 member campuses, to expand the civic engagement and poverty alleviation efforts of students and faculty in their respective communities.
