Gender and brain plasticity

GRANVILLE, Ohio—THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED - Rebecca Jordan-Young, a professor of women’s gender and sexuality studies at Barnard College, will present “Remodeling the Gendered Brain: Plasticity, Intersectionality and Other Challenges to Models of ‘Essential Difference’.” The lecture will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, in the lecture hall of Denison University’s Burton D. Jordan-Young is a sociomedical scientist whose research includes social epidemiology studies of HIV/aids and evaluation of biological work on sex, gender and sexualityHer new book, “Brain Storm: The Flaws in the Science of Sex Differences,” is a comprehensive critical analysis of research purporting to demonstrate that hormone exposures in utero “hardwire” the brain to be either masculine or feminine in sexuality, skills and interests.
 
Jordan-Young’s lecture is part of the Laura C. Harris Symposium 2012-2013, which examines the role of women and of gender in science. The Laura C. Harris Symposium is dedicated to Dr. Harris’ memory as a revolutionary woman in the fields of education and medicine. The purpose of the lecture series, sponsored by Denison’s Women’s Studies Department, is to encourage Denison women to continue seeking new educational and professional opportunities.
