Posted: March 26, 2003

The Denison Department of Psychology will present a symposium to honor Dr. Harry Heft, professor of psychology, for the recent publication of his book, "Ecological Psychology in Context: James Gibson, Roger Barker, and the legacy of William James' Radical Empiricism" (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2001) on Monday (March 31) from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Slayter Hall Auditorium. In the first part of the symposium, Dr. Heft will make a presentation, "Psychology as an Ecological Psychologist Views It," based upon topics that are analyzed in the book. Thereafter, two distinguished scholars will make short presentations with commentary and analysis of Dr. Heft's book. The respondents are Professor John Flach (Department of Psychology, Wright State University) and Professor Susan Saegert (Director, Center for Human Environments, City University of New York). A reception will follow the presentations in the University Room in Slayter Hall from 6:30 and 7:15 p.m. Faculty, students, staff, and members of the community are invited to attend the symposium and reception.

Heft came to Denison in 1976 after completing a Ph.D. in Man-Environment Relations at Pennsylvania State University. He received a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Maryland in 1969 and a master's in psychology from the University of Bridgeport in 1971. In 2002, Heft was elected to a three-year term to the Board of Directors of the International Society for Ecological Psychology.
