Posted: October 10, 2005
The Heisey Wind Ensemble will open its 21st season at 7:30 p.m., Sunday (Oct. 23) in Swasey Chapel. Russel Mikkelson, music director, has titled this concert, "Al Fresco." Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students.
"Music of the Outdoors" presented by the Ensemble at this concert includes "Ride" and "Their Blossoms Down" by Samuel R. Hazo, "October" by Eric Whitacre, "Bugs" by Roger Cichy, "American River Songs" by Pierre La Plante, and "Of Sailors and Whales" by W. Francis McBeth.
In 2003, the Ensemble was selected as one of the top community music groups in the state by the Ohio Music Educators Association. The band membership is made up of community members, Denison University students and faculty. Formed in February 1985 by J. M. Day and Don Workman, the Denison University music department has provided support and some operational funding since 1987. The balance of the cost of the season is funded through patron giving and ticket sales.
Mikkelson, in addition to serving as the HWE music director, serves as director of university bands and as an associate professor of conducting at Ohio State. Mikkelson serves on the Big Ten Band Directors Association Commissioning Panel and has instituted a program of regular commissioning projects at OSU.
