Posted: December 7, 2005

The Heisey Wind Ensemble will present its annual holiday concert at 8 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 10) in Swasey Chapel on the Denison University campus. "Christmas at Swasey" will feature tenor Jeffrey Rings, choral director at Johnstown-Monroe High School, and soprano Melody Rings, a junior at Johnstown-Monroe High School. The Ensemble also will present two new transcriptions of holiday music for concert band. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and students. The Heisey Wind Ensemble is directed by Russel Mikkelson.

The ensemble is made up of community members, Denison University students and faculty. Formed in February 1985 by J. M. Day and Don Workman, the Denison University music department has provided support and some operational funding since 1987. The balance of the cost of the season is funded through patron giving and ticket sales. In 2003, the Ensemble was selected as one of the top community music groups in the state by the Ohio Music Educators Association.

Mikkelson, in addition to serving as the HWE music director, serves as an associate professor of conducting and as director of university bands at Ohio State. Mikkelson serves on the Big Ten Band Directors Association Commissioning Panel and has instituted a program of regular commissioning projects at OSU.
