Date of Event: April 6, 2006
Posted: March 27, 2006
Denison University art department will present a lecture by Irish artist Kathy Herbert at 7 p.m. on Thursday (April 6) in Cleveland Hall Annex 104. Her presentation, "Process and Progress: The Work of Kathy Herbert," is free and open to the public. Herbert will be on campus from April 2 through April 8 to visit classes and work with students. Her visit is sponsored by the art department and McGregor lecture series funds.
This will be the third visit to Denison for Herbert, having visited once in 1996 and as a participant in the "Out of Belfast" Exhibition in 1999.
Herbert studied at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, and the University of Ulster at Belfast. She has exhibited most recently at the Waterfront Gallery, Sligo, and her show "Field" has recently traveled to a number of venues in Ireland. Her work was shown in the "Eire/Land Exhibition" at the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College.
"To date," says Herbert, "I have made work using drawing and painting, sculpture, photography and installation. My sources are drawn from traces in the land of habitations; from maps and aerial photographs; from found objects, folklore, customs and stories. All these things inspire my imagery and ideas."
"When I look around me I see both the way we have affected the land and how we are affectedbyit," she continues, "This symbiotic relationship is the primary concern in my work. My work is joyful and it celebrates the human presence as well as the beauty of the colors and scale of nature."
Herbert's work is represented in many collections including the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ireland, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the Department of Family and Community Affairs, Dublin, and the McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College. Examples of her art can be seen on her website at www.kathyherbert.ie.
