Sharon Holland Speaks On 'African Diaspora'

Sharon Holland, professor of African American Studies at Northwestern University, will speak at Denison in a lecture titled "The African American Diaspora in Indian Country" at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Nov. 1) in the Burton-Morgan lecture hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Holland earned a bachelor's degree from Princeton in Afro-American Studies and English and a doctorate from the University of Michigan in English language and literature. Previous teaching assignments include positions at the University of Illinois, SUNY Albany, and Stanford, where she was awarded the Sinclair Drake Teaching Award and was appointed a Dean's Fellow in the Humanities.
Holland is the co-author of "Crossing Waters, Crossing Worlds: the African Diaspora in Indian Country," and "Raising the Dead: Death and (Black) Subjectivity in Twentieth Century Literature and Culture." She also is an expert on author Zora Neale Hurston and has presented papers on Hurston's seminal novel, "Their Eyes Were Watching God," which appeared in "All About Zora" in 1991.
