Posted: September 23, 2002
GRANVILLE - A Denison University art student, Ana Howrani, will exhibit her works in photography, drawing and digital manipulations at both Cleveland Hall on campus and at the new Central Gallery @ The Works in Newark. Completed this past summer under the auspices of the Young Scholar program at Denison, the show is titled "People and Their Environment." Howrani is from Lathrop Village, Mich., and a junior at Denison living at The Homestead, a unique residence option at Denison using sustainable, alternative energy sources.

The show will open with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 28) at the Cleveland Hall Student Art Gallery where it will hang until Oct. 10. It will then move to the Central Gallery @ The Works (50 S. 2nd St., Newark) from Oct. 24 through Nov. 16. A second reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday (Oct. 24) is planned there. Hours at the Central Gallery are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Howrani's works depict her personal reactions to The Homestead. "The community aspect of homesteading is very important to me," says Howrani, "because of the daily challenges and rewards that can be taken from nearly anything I do out there."
Photography is the foundation of many of the pieces in the show. "Sometimes I used photography in a very straightforward way," she says. "Other times, I experimented with digitally manipulating some of the photographs." Howrani also used the photos as a starting point for her drawings. Her work with digital manipulations also revealed a process of layering that she used in the drawings.
