Leader in Higher Education Research To Speak at Denison University

GRANVILLE -- Sylvia Hurtado, who has coordinated several national research projects on higher education, will speak at 7 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 9) in Slayter Auditorium at Denison University. Her presentation is titled "Linking Diversity with the Educational and Civic Mission of the Institution." The convocation is free and open to the public.

Hurtado is professor and director of the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA in the Graduate School of Education and Information. Her research projects include a U.S. Department of Education-sponsored project on how colleges are preparing students to achieve the cognitive, social, and democratic skills to participate in a diverse democracy. She is launching a National Institutes of Health project on the preparation of under-represented students for biomedical and behavioral science research careers. A previous project involved assessment, reform, and innovation in undergraduate education through the National Center for Postsecondary Improvement.

Additionally, Hurtado served as director of the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education at the University of Michigan. She has published numerous articles and books related to her primary interest in student educational outcomes, campus climates, college impact on student development, and diversity in higher education.Black Issues In Higher Educationnamed Hurtado among the top 15 influential faculty whose work has had an impact on the academy. She has served on several editorial boards for journals in education and served on the boards for the American Association of Higher Education, the Higher Learning Commission, and is the former president of the Association of the Study of Higher Education. Hurtado earned her bachelor's degree from Princeton University in sociology, a master's degree from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a doctoral degree in Education from UCLA.

Hurtado's visit is sponsored by the Campus Environment Team, a Denison task force promoting a harmonious campus environment and the free exchange of ideas.
