The plot of the show concerns a band of immortal fairies that finds itself at odds with England’s House of Peers. The operetta satirizes many aspects of British government and law with a humorous twist. “Iolanthe” also is known for some of the most beautiful music of all the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.
The first performances of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas in America during the 1880s greatly influenced the form and development of the American musical. “Iolanthe” itself premiered in 1882 and is the seventh show produced by the famous librettist and composer team.
Leading the cast is sophomore John Arnold as Lord Chancellor, and junior Molly Coyne and sophomore Alec Lee portray two lovers, Phyllis and Strephon. Other roles include; Sophia Chen, the Queen of the Fairies; Katherine Damisch, Iolanthe: Ben Chiewphasa, Earl of Mountararat; Xander Jarowey, Earl Tolloller; JD Carter, Private Willis; and an ensemble of peers and fairies.
