Four students who have played in the Denison Jazz Combo during their four-year stay in college will play their final concert at 8 p.m. on Tuesday (March 9) in the Burke Recital Hall. Playing with them will be Tom Carroll, an instructor in the music department faculty and adviser to the student musicians. The concert is free and open to the public. Tunes by John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis and others are on the program.

Carroll, who has been guiding the student Jazz Combo performances for 15 years, says, "This is the finest combo I've had here at Denison." Senior class members of the combo are Jared Thompson on sax, Andy Juechter on piano, Drew Johnson on guitar and Seth Rogers on drums. Carroll joins them on bass.

"I have never played with musicians with so much talent," says Johnson, an environmental studies major from Louisville, Ky. "I feel privileged to play with them." Rogers, who is double majoring in economics and music and plans to pursue a master's degree in jazz studies, comments that the group came from very different backgrounds and beginnings and brought very different things to the table. But, he says, "We all had a desire to explore and exploration is the heart of this musical tradition."

Juechter, an applied music major who comes from Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., plans on going to Mali, Africa, to study with several master drummers. Thompson, who also is an applied music major, hails from Indianapolis, Ind., and plans on working as a musician following graduation.
