Denison University Concert Features Student Jazz Groups

The Denison University music department presents a concert featuring two of Denison's student musical groups, the Student Jazz Combo and the Latin Jazz Percussion Ensemble, at 3 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 10) in Burke Recital Hall. The groups are directed by Tom Carroll and Guy Remonko, respectively. Faculty member Richard Lopez will join the Student Jazz Combo on piano. The concert is free and open to the public.
The concert program opens with "Little Sunflower" by Freddie Huibbard, "Afro Blue" by Santamaria, "Jody Grind" by Silver and "Abracadabra" by Norell, performed by the Latin Jazz Percussion Ensemble. The Jazz Combo follows with "Impressions" by Coltrane, "My Little Suede Shoes" by Parker and "Footprints" by Shorter.
Carroll has been an instructor in Denison's music department since 1980. He has performed with Ernie Watts, Marvin Stamm, Rusty Bryant and Gary Carney and leads his own ensemble, The Tom Carroll Trio. Carroll organizes Denison's annual Jazz Guitar Festival and is a member of the Faculty Jazz Quintet. Since 2000 Carroll has coordinated the Jazz Studies program at Denison. He also serves on the faculties of Ohio State and Capital University. His first recording,"City Lights," featuring Hank Marr, Gary Carney and Jim Rupp, will be released this spring.
Remonko is professor emeritus of music at Ohio University and an affiliated studio instructor of percussion at Denison. In addition to teaching percussion, he is a member of Denison's Faculty Jazz Quintet and the Bob Thompson Trio. He is also active as a clinician and free-lance jazz drummer/percussionist presenting clinics and performing at major clubs and festivals throughout the country.
Lopez is a member of the adjunct faculty at Denison and at Capital University in Columbus. He has performed with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus. He has produced two CDs featuring well-known Columbus musicians.
