Lecture looks at Arab revolutions

Date of Event: October 10, 2012

GRANVILLE, Ohio— A lecture, “Arab Uprisings: Revolutions or Reconfiguration,” will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the auditorium of Denison University’s Higley Hall (100 Ridge Road). The lecture, by Fadhel Kaboub assistant professor of economics at Denison, is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Fadhel Kaboub at 740-587-6315 or visit www.denison.edu

The lecture will question the so-called “Arab Revolutions” and the claim that the uprisings are moving the Arab world into a new era of transition towards liberal democracies. Kaboub argues that the neoliberal economic model of the 1980s that led to increased inequality, corruption, and social exclusion is still in place today across the region. Civil war rages in Syria; militias control Libya several months after the elections; Yemen has a new president but may slip back into a civil war; youth unemployment is higher than ever in Tunisia and Egypt; and the autocratic monarchies are stronger than ever. What appears to be a genuine popular revolution, may in fact be a new reconfiguration of the neoliberal economic model with a democratic façade.
