GRANVILLE—Attention Birders: Renowned naturalist Kenn Kaufman will present a talk on Ohio birds at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, March 27, in Higley Hall (100 Ridge Road). Kaufman’s appearance is sponsored by the McGregor Connections Initiative’s Hum/an/imal Series, and is free and open to the public.

As an Indiana native, Kaufman realized that elephants, giraffes, whales and bears were far out of his backyard’s reach, so he set is eyes on wild birds. His passion has carried him to all seven continents, and he has lived in seven U.S. states.

“Living on earth without knowing anything about nature is like living in Tokyo without knowing a word of Japanese.” Kaufman has said. “Sure, you can get by. But you’re going to miss a lot of what’s going on.”

Kaufman is a freelance naturalist and writer who has published seven books including “Kingbird Highway” (2006), a memoir documenting his 80,000 mile, cross-county trek in North America. In 1973, at only 19, Kaufman set the record with the most North American birds seen in one year with an astounding count of 671 species. Also, in 1992, Kaufman was awarded the Ludlow Griscom Award by the American Birding Association for Outstanding Contributions to American Ornithology. He lives in northwestern Ohio.
