Posted: October 24, 2005

Denison University's department of history will sponsor an appearance by Rachel Klein, a historian of the American South and 19th century urban culture. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday (Oct. 27) in Slayter Auditorium. Klein is touring the country under the auspices of the Organization of American Historians Lectureship Program.

A member of the faculty in the Earl Warren College at the University of California, San Diego, Klein will speak on "Art and Artists in Mid-19th Century Sentimental Culture." She began her career as a historian of the American South and is the author of "Unification of a Slave State: The Rise of the Planter Class in the South Carolina Backcountry, 1760-1808."

Klein is now working on a manuscript titled "Culture Wars: Art, Authority and the Transformation of Taste in 19th Century New York." She earned her doctorate at Yale University and was named as the Humanities Faculty Fellow at UCSD in 1999/2000.

"Klein brings rigorous and innovative scholarly approaches to the study of 19th century American culture," says Professor Mitchell Snay of Denison's history department. "Her talk should interest students of American history, art and cultural studies."
